Washington State University offers and incredible amount of collegiate sports and activities with which students can participate. Many of these teams are even ranked nationally. However, some teams receive more attention than others, both in terms of recognition and school funding. WSU’s Men’s Rowing in an example of one the less recognized but none the less sports at this university.
The Cougar Crew website reports WSU Men’s Rowing is the oldest sport club at the university. It was formed during the spring of 1970 by a group of young WSU students who had rowed previously in Seattle during their high schools years. The team received a helping hand from WSU administrator Ken Abbey. Abbey was not only the assistant Vice-President for Business, but he was also a former rower from the University of Washington. Abbey’s connection with WSU administration and the UW crew team allowed for approval, funding, and boats to form a Cougar Crew.
Since their establishment, the WSU Crew has done well for themselves. The Men’s and Women’s Teams have created a reputation of hard work and competiveness for themselves. However, in 1992 after the passage of Tilte-9, the Women’s team joined Cougar Athletics. The Men’s team has since operated on their own, producing ¾ of their budget through fundraisers throughout their season.
